Can't get better then the management of Equity Residential and their staff at 170 Amsterdam! I've lived here for 4 months now and it just gets better everyday, the location is amazing you are walking distance to Everything you could need and want.Simply the best!

I lived in 170 Amsterdam Apartments for a year when it first opened. I was the first person to live in my apartment. The building is new and beautiful, and makes an impression on your guests, if that's what you're after. The location was of course great there on the UWS. The appliances and fixtures in the unit were good too.

Cons:

Downside was the noise. Surprised to see that only one other reviewer has mentioned this, since a lot of us were frustrated by the problem. The building's beautiful wall to wall window design allows sound to travel between adjacent units on the same floor with unusual ease. I could hear every word my neighbor was saying on the phone. Those phone calls, I didn't mind ... but the parties until 4 AM .... If you're lucky and have quiet neighbors, no problem. If, like me, you have a noisy kid next door whose rich European parents bought her a Manhattan party pad ... well, you won't be sleeping much.Equity is the original owner of this building, so needs to bear responsibility for its design. Unfortunately, management just wasn't able to get the noise situation under control. I suspect with a skilled building manager, my young neighbor could have been pushed into line, but unfortunately there was just talk and no action from this manager, and in the end I moved out after only a year. Overall it was a very frustrating experience. The building I moved to in Long Island City is a bit older, but has much better soundproofing between the units.Problem is, you most likely won't be aware of the problem until you've already moved in, so if you have a job that requires sleep, look elsewhere :)

The team at Equity Apartments were fantastic - they made what could have been a very stressful situation smooth and easy... it was amazing how accommodating they were and it showed that they cared. Not often you get to say that when it comes to finding an apartment in Manhattan! Would recommend - no hesitations.

I love living here. Yes, the rents border on ridiculous- this is true. However, I would never live anywhere else in NYC - especially on UES/UWS. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the neighborhood is killer, the apartments are absolutely gorgeous, the rooftop and downstairs lounges are amazing. The gym is spacious and clean... there are so many amenities for residents I feel spoiled. The people living here are cool, young, and fun. I finally feel home in this city. Highly recommend this building.

It has all I need to make it my home, the amenities outstanding, the location is very convenient walking distance everywhere, management team & maintenance team are very professional and always very helpful doing their best all the time. The price you pay to living is worth it, in life the best always has a price, 170 Amsterdam offers great quality of life.

by way of update my other side neighbors (perhaps new tenants) for some reason now really like having lively discussions around the same time when i try to fall asleep on week days, and i can hear them pretty clearly. Especially when they had people over during the holidays. Everything else is great.

Cons:

Intrabuilding insulation between apartments here really is lacking. Buyer beware.

This review is long over due. I am one of the original tenants at 170 Amsterdam, I moved to 170 in May of 2015 shortly after the building opened. Like my profile heading states, I am NYC Born and Raised so I have lived in my share of NYC apartments. I am by no means a regular contributor to Yelp as you can see from the number of reviews under my belt, but here it goes my honest review of not only the building itself, but of the incredible staff. Its sad that a keyboard and anonymity can lead many on yelp to lash out at those they feel wronged by but it can also be used for praise. No place is perfect. My wife and I moved to a 1 bedroom apt in May of 2015. From the moment we came to look at our 1st apt to the present, the managment team have been nothing short of stellar. 170 has probably one of the finest service managers in NYC Metus Osmanovic. Metus was the first person to greet me on my move in date. Facilities managment in NYC is not an easy task. Metus shines in his field. Knowing the inner workings of your property is key in service management, and Metus knows 170 Amsterdam intricately. Metus makes sure that all service request are met in a timely manner. The Concierge team is lead by the one and only Andres Medina. Andres epitomizes what a concierge should be. Always friendly, always there to lend a helping hand. Its not easy to put on a smiling face and really mean it in NYC but Andres does 365 days a year. Working a front desk not only involves greeting tenants. The hard working concierges at 170 deal with receiving hundreds of packages per day, the reception of guest, and first and foremost, the security of the building. it would take me all day to mention every concierge and all they do in the building, but the team works well together. The review of the 170 staff would not be complete without mentioning the Community Manager Hendrick Fernandez. Hendrick is a true professional. Dealing with the public in a general sense is not easy, dealing with rent paying tenants that expect the world from their buildings management is a whole different arena. Like most of the tenants living at 170 Amsterdam I have expected my fair share from the management. The first true test of how capable and how truly professional Hendrick is came when my growing family needed to move to a bigger apt. The upgrade to a 2 bedroom was seamless. Hendrick and his office staff particularly Olivia who has been promoted to another position within equity residential, made the move for me and my family effortless. All the paper work and headaches were non existent because Hendricks and his team worked diligently to expedite my move within the building. It is obvious that Hedrick Fernandez is passionate about his trade. I can truly say that my expectations have been met at 170 Amsterdam. The building speaks for itself. Beautiful modern apts, Roof Deck with Grills, Community Lounge, Awesome modern gym, Bike room, Music room for those would-be Philharmonic hopefuls, Golf Simulator and even a pet spa. No place within the city limits is perfect. When living in an NYC apt we have to have reasonable expectations.

Awesome location just a few blocks from the park! The 1/2/3 and A/B/C stops are located less than a five minute walk from 170 Amsterdam so you can't beat the convenience whether you're going uptown or downtown. Also, the building is brand new and the floor-to-ceiling windows allow for great natural light in my apartment. The building staff is extremely helpful and accommodating and I would recommend this apartment building to friends/family.

Prime location. But a ceiling collapse and the response and conduct of staff altogether eroded my confidence in the safety of the building and the staff's commitment to the basics - tenants' safety, tenants' privacy and confidentiality, resolving matters with professionalism and competence, and lawful conduct.On February 21 2016, the ceiling collapsed in the Resident Lounge of 170 Amsterdam Apartments, seriously injuring me (a tenant). 911 was called. The incident was captured on the Building's security camera footage. Days later, I found I could not access my Resident Account and when I asked Community Manager Hendrick Fernandez about this, he said he had been instructed to delete my account. When I later pressed Hendrick Fernandez for a copy of the security camera footage for medical purposes, and for the matter to be resolved amicably without litigation and trial, he got enraged and said "you want to expose me to my wife." He ordered me to leave the premises.Mary Pawlisa, Senior Regional Manager for Equity Residential stated that my asking questions relating to the ceiling collapse for medical purposes is "unacceptable and will not be tolerated." My personal contact information was provided to multiple 3rd parties despite my requesting that it not be provided. When I said I will be pursuing litigation, Mary Pawlisa immediately changed the tone of her emails. Another Equity Residential agent also told me "you can't sue us" because Equity leases contain an indemnification clause that states the property owners and staff cannot be held liable for injuries sustained by tenants in the premises of the building. A Tenant Harassment Complaint has since been filed with the Office of the Attorney General.The property owners ACP Amsterdam I, LLC and Equity Residential, including the Building Management, are duty-bound to provide information on matters affecting tenants' safety. They refused to provide such information, and directed all questions to the builder RYDER Construction and its insurance carrier. This even after the NYC Department of Buildings investigated and issued a Safety Violation notice.A ceiling collapsed. A tenant was injured. The smart thing for the parties to do is to 1st, act in accordance with duties owed to the tenant and 2nd, work with the tenant to resolve the matter fairly and honestly, with or without litigation. In this way, all parties can walk away with their reputations damaged but their credibility intact. Smarts alone will tell you that this restores confidence in a business.Instead, the parties engaged in unlawful conduct - subornation, coercion, retaliation - and in lying, misrepresenting facts, even denying the incident occurred and that security camera footage exists.No offer of compensation has been made.I will say this: What is "unacceptable and will not be tolerated" is ceilings collapsing in a residential building.

I considered moving units in the building multiple times and she always makes time to show me the layouts and discuss options.The whole building has great staff!!

We recently moved into 170 Amsterdam and have been very happy with our decision. We have lived in several apartment buildings on the Upper West Side over the past few years that are described as luxury buildings - finally we have found a building that warrants the description. Equity Apartments has a very easy application process. We visited the apartment several times before moving in and the leasing manager, Olivia could not have been more helpful in answering our questions and following up on some questions / requests we had. Overall, this was the most straightforward lease application we have gone through.When we first saw the building (when passing by during construction) we were not sure what to think - with its exoskeletal design. Now, as residents, we are very happy with all the natural light and modern conveniences that most newer buildings have (washer/dryer, gym, golf simulator, pet spa, conference room etc etc). Bathrooms and kitchens are spacious (by NYC standards) and the fixtures are good quality. Management is also planning for resident events during the warmer months which gives the building a nice vibe.In summary, we would recommend this building. Moving is never fun but everyone from the leasing office to the front desk staff have made the move a positive experience.

Having lived in several rental buildings over the years, 170 Amsterdam stands out as being a place I have enjoyed calling home. The architecture is stunning, layouts are great and the service is spectacular. The building has all the amenities that are nice to have (eg. washer dryer in unit) and also amenities I did not know I wanted (eg. gold simulator).The leasing process was the easiest I have encountered and Olivia was a pleasure to deal with. The form was simple and straightforward with no hidden fees. Olivia showed us several apartments in the building to us over and over again until we found the perfect unit, with no complaints. High recommend 170 Amsterdam!

I loved the look of this building and was able to see a couple of units during my apartment search. However, the leasing office acts so entitled and are completely unhelpful. After schlepping uptown to see this apartment, I followed up with numerous calls and emails to get more information and get some questions answered from a woman named Olivia. It's been a while and I never got a call back or email(s) answered. So incredibly unprofessional and rude. The prices at 170 Amsterdam are outrageous. If I am ready to sign a lease, clearly I can afford living here. It would have been nice to be treated with a more respect and courtesy. There are enough luxury apartments in the city for any respectable person to put up with this kind of behavior. In fact, I am moving to Hawthorn Park (a Glenwood management building). I feel badly writing this negative note - however, Equity Apartments needs to train their staff better as they are the representatives of the building.

I'm hopeful that others jump in with more reviews - maybe my experience was an anomaly.170 Amsterdam is a very distinctive-looking new building. Some people love the architecture, a lot of the neighbors don't. I think it looks cool, and they manage to take some of that design into the building, in the common areas and the apartments. Even the bathroom floors reflect the aesthetic. It was all designed very cleverly, and the whole package hangs together and looks great.

Cons:

But here's where we run into some problems - the execution is just not up to the design. These are very expensive apartments, especially since they're a little small. It's disappointing that finishes and appliances are very much mid-range, although new. The windows are great and big, but the roller shades are ineffective at keeping out light, and are way too translucent to provide enough privacy. And probably the biggest issue - the one that forced me to move after 6 weeks - was the noise that comes through the walls. They're relatively thin in the first place, but the building also hasn't solved some engineering challenges related to the gap where the interior wall meets the glass exterior, and allows conversation and TV noise to just pass through from apartment to apartment relatively unabated. Hopefully they should be able to figure that out - I just wasn't willing to wait for it. In addition, my apartment was on the North end of the building, and I had a constant rumble from the next door synagogue's HVAC that I couldn't stop hearing.Service was inconsistent, also. The doormen are friendly, professional and otherwise great, although they've surprisingly got a lot of administrative work to do and are trapped behind a wall, so they can't provide a ton of assistance for residents coming in the door with packages or luggage. The porters and service department were perfectly nice, but my (brand new) apartment was not well inspected and fairly scuffed up when I moved in, and although I was promised that they'd touch-up, it never really happened. It took several weeks to remedy a minor construction defect that took probably about an hour to correct. Pretty much every deadline they provided about anything - from the beginning of the leasing process, to maintenance commitments, to the very last signature - was blown through without any acknowledgement. I think a lot of that had to do with the building's manager, who was not ready for the job, not customer-focused, and I believe no longer at the building. All that said, now in a new Equity building, I think I'm continuing to see a minor disconnect between management and maintenance, so this might be a corporate issue that 170 just needs some time to navigate.I appreciated Equity's policies that allowed me to transfer to another building of theirs, and the process - guided by the rental staff at the Trumps - was surprisingly painless. Like I said above, I'm hopeful that others jump in with their reviews - I got a lemon of an apartment, and didn't have a good vibe with management, but maybe that's a minority experience.
